City Dance was founded in 2003 at 10 Chase Court, San Francisco, a beautiful and magical space that we shared with City Ballet until the building was sold in 2018. We added a second location in 2010 at 1420 Harrison Street and when we lost our original facility due to a property sale in late 2018, we leased a building at 1144 Howard Street. This project ultimately failed when Covid shut everything down. We re-opened for full time in person instruction October 2021 at 30 Otis Street, a new space with 4 studios that we again share with City Ballet, and 60 Brady Street, a fantastic space that will accommodate performances, battles, events, studio rentals and classes. The two buildings are just around the corner from one another.
We specialize in urban dance forms such as Popping, House, Breaking, Locking, TopRock, Tutting, Waacking and 90's Hip Hop. We also have a fantastic selection of Hip Hop Choreo, Jazz, KPOP, Tap, Tango, Salsa and Contemporary dance classes.
Our instructors are highly accomplished dancers and excellent/caring teachers. It's very important to us that City Dance feels like a welcoming community to everyone who comes through our doors.
We are also well known for hosting some of the best dancers in the world for master classes. We have attracted students from as far away as Japan, Russian, Europe, South America and Australia to attend classes offered by Mr. Wiggles, Buddha Stretch, Marjory Smarth, Caleaf Sellers, Salah, Les Twins, Ejoe Wilson, Brooklyn Terry, Poe One, Iron Monkey, Kid David, SBR, Suga Pop, Ian Eastwood, Mariel Martin, Jillian Meyers, Tony Testa, Pharside, Krystal Meraz, Larkin Poynton, Boogie Frantick, King Charles, Slim Boogie, the dancers from NDT2 and many more!
Three times a year we produce shows where students perform onstage, with their instructors and other world class guest artists. These shows get better every year and they are becoming more and more popular among students and dance lovers alike.
In February of 2015, we presented “Nederlands Dance Theater 2” to a sold out house at the Palace of Fine Arts. We also offered master classes where students learned choreography from the show taught by dancers from the company. It was a wonderful experience and we hope to bring more world class companies to the bay area in the future.
In person classes are now held at our brand new location that we share with City Ballet at 30 Otis Street. And we recently started offering classes at our new performance space at 60 Brady Street.
